5 Tips To Get Kids Moving This Summer

In-Shape | 22 Jun, 2022 | Wellness Tips & Trends | Return|

School’s out, which means kids are home more than ever—and we don’t want them filling all their free hours with screen time. Kids need to stay active to build healthy habits, enjoy their summer to the fullest and get all their energy out before bed! Here are 5 ways to keep your kids (and the rest of your family) active this summer.

1. Go On Family Hikes

Becoming a healthy, active family is all about changing your habits. This summer, what if you and the kids went on a family hike every weekend? Not only do those steps add up, but you’ll all enjoy some fresh air. Check out online resources like this list on AllTrails or google “kid-friendly hikes near me” to find age-appropriate trails close to home. Don’t forget the sunscreen, lots of water, and snacks for you and the kiddos!

2. Games & Sports

Have any of your little ones shown an interest in trying a sport? School is out, so it’s an awesome time for them to try something new. Many communities have camps and clinics with several start dates through the summer for various sports. Your city may have sent you a summer activity guide in the mail, or you can search online for sports clinics near you.

If your kids aren’t into sports, bring them to the park a few days a week for activities you can do together like Horse at the basketball court, throwing the frisbee, playing tag, tossing a football, or jumping rope.

3. Plan Active Outings

Set a few days out of the month aside for special active outings. You can head to In-Shape for a day at the pool, head to a Family Fitness Event, or head out of town to try a new bowling alley, roller rink or trampoline park. When your family looks back on this summer, these are the days you’ll remember best.

4. Get Creative

Add some new, fun activities into their home routine. For kids who love being in front of a screen, try an active video game like Ring Fit Adventure or Just Dance.

If your kids help with weekly chores, make sure to include at least one active chore like raking leaves, vacuuming, sweeping or washing the car. Switch it up with a new active chore each week to keep things interesting.

5. Lead By Example

Kids—especially young kids—often want to copy what their parents do. The most important thing you can do to encourage your kids to get moving is to make sure you get your workout in. Show your kids that exercise is important and something you prioritize. And remember, if you need someone to watch the kiddos, we’ll keep them having fun in the Kid Zone while you head to a studio fitness class or hit the treadmill or weight room.
