American Standouts to Headline Main Draw Field at $50,000 USTA Pro Circuit Challenger
In-Shape: Fairfield Rancho Solano October 11th-18th
FAIRFIELD, CA – October 1, 2015 – The USTA announced that a number of American players with rising star status have accepted entry for the Fairfield Men’s Pro Challenger presented by Francis Ford Coppola Winery. The tournament, which is a $50KUSTA Pro Circuit/ATP Challenger event, will be a part of three men’s USTA Challenger events that will swing through northern California, with proceeds to benefit the Chris Cammisa Tennis and Education Foundation (CCTEF).
The Official Player Acceptance List boasts many notable Americans currently ranked in the world’s top 200, including Ryan Harrison who has a career high ranking of World No. 43, and Tim Smyczek, holding a career high ranking of World No. 68.
Harrison, currently World No. 116, is the protégé of his Austin, TX neighbor Andy Roddick, and has spent the better part of 2015 fighting his way back towards a top 100 ranking. Throughout his career Harrison has played in 18 Grand Slam main draws, and with tough luck has faced Top 40 competitors in the first round on 13 occasions including Rafael Nadal, Andy Murray, Robin Soderling, Marin Cilic and Grigor Dimitrov.
Smyczek who is currently ranked World No. 106, earned his career high ranking of 68 in April of this year. Smyczek’s 4 hour long, 2ndround battle against Rafael Nadal in this year’s Australian Open earned him a notable amount of media attention. Smyczek lost 7-5 in the fifth set after graciously allowing Nadal to repeat a critical serve following a disturbance by a member of the crowd. Smyczek left the court to a standing ovation for his sportsmanship and stellar performance throughout the match.
Harrison and Smyczek are 2 of 5 Americans in the Main Draw, along with Jared Donaldson, currently the top ranked teenager in the ATP rankings; Bjorn Fratangelo, who won the Boys Singles title at the 2011 French Open, and only the 2ndAmerican to win the event as a junior, following John McEnroe in 1977; and Dennis Novikov, the former UCLA No1 payer who turned pro to compete in the US Open in 2013.
All events and the tournament are located at 3254 Rancho Solano Parkway; In-Shape: Fairfield Rancho Solano is a multi-recreational, family athletic facility offering health, fitness, sports, recreation and social programs for people of all ages and interests. The tennis facility features 11 lighted tennis courts, and the Cliff Drysdale Tennis-managed program offers instruction, leagues and events for players of all ages and abilities.
