Moving is a task that requires proper planning, organizing, packing, and sometimes heavy lifting. Let’s be honest, having some help really makes things significantly easier. The help of some good friends, or even hiring professional movers, is a great way to be able to get more done in less time. In my opinion, the hardest part of moving is acquiring a new space that you are not quite comfortable with…yet. The pots and pans are now in a new place, the kitchen sink is to the left not the right of the stove, the cupboards open up the other way, etc. A new home may be a wonderful thing but it does take some time to get used to.  Embarking on a move to the other side of town, or to somewhere further, is no different than taking the journey in transforming your body: you must be prepared, plan ahead, and have the essential tools to make the journey more efficient. The foundation of a successful fitness plan is having structure in your workout program as well as following a healthy eating plan.  Both should be designed to work with your body, much like a checklist for your move should work to make the move itself less stressful and hectic. Whether you get the help from a friend or professional in your goal of achieving the body that you want, the most important part is finding what works best for you.

Diets vs. Healthy Eating: There is an over abundance of resources available when it comes to achieving short term goals like the latest fad diet. However, what good does it do if you’re only able to maintain a temporary goal?  Sure something is better than nothing, but why would you allow yourself to not reach your full potential? Taking a step outside your comfort zone is what most people need to get their bodies moving in the right direction.  Making smaller changes are more likely to lead to long lasting results rather than making drastic changes that are only going to last 4-6 weeks. Instead of cutting things out cold turkey, make those changes slowly or better yet, make healthier choices as alternatives for particular foods. An example of this would be brown rice instead of white rice, whole wheat products instead of white flour products. You will see that looking for the long term results will make a significant difference in your body as opposed to getting there too quickly then losing those results in the same amount of time.

Workout Buddy vs. Trainer: There is a huge difference between having a workout partner or to have someone who is there to push you to your fullest potential in a time frame that works for you. If your workout buddy is sick, that gives you less accountability to make it to the gym. “Well if they can’t make it to the gym, there’s no harm if I don’t go.” Yes there is great harm because you are allowing yourself to be subjected to someone else’s agenda, not your own.  For example, if you are wanting to compete with an avid gym enthusiast’s workout simply because they can bench press 225 pounds, that doesn’t mean you should try to match that intensity; this is possibly the biggest mistake most newcomers make. “Well they are definitely in great shape.” As true as that may be, it is because they understand what works for their body, not to mention they have worked their bodies to that level. Your body is different and its requirements are different. You need to make sure the right combination is appropriately applied. A trainer will be there to make sure that you get a great workout in, to learn how to properly exercise, and most importantly to make sure you are going in the right direction. Trainers are certified professionals, some of us even have a bachelor or master degree; you wouldn’t get health advise from some guy on the bus, so why get nutritional and workout advise from someone who simply goes to the gym. There is one disclaimer that I would like to make: trainers do not have a magic wand, they cannot make your body magically change, only you can make that change happen by applying what they are teaching you to do.  Also, some of our best friends can be the worst workout buddies, know the difference.
