‘Tis the season of family time! It can be difficult to fit in time at the health club with the kids being out of school, or family staying at your house. This doesn’t mean you can’t get your workout in. Getting your family active can be easier than you may have thought. Just make it fun! Here are a few ways you can get your family active this holiday season.

Get Outside:

It might only take a little fresh air to get the family active. Having the wide-open space can make football and other outdoor games possible. Even walking or biking around the neighborhood can be fun with family and allow for good conversation. If your family needs some motivation, make a holiday scavenger hunt. It is bound to get people active and searching!

Start New Traditions:

Families usually have their traditions during the holiday season. Why not try to make a new tradition that is centered on fitness? Register the family for a fun run or a holiday 5K. Look for themed events such as “Ugly Christmas Sweater 5K” or “Jingle Bell Run.” If you want to spend your weekend shopping, bring the family along with you to the mall. Map out a route, and try to walk to every corner of the mall. The family won’t even know they are exercising!

Make Chores Into Games:

With the holiday feasts and family visits, there may be more chores that need to be done.  Chores can be fun by making them into games, or listening to upbeat music. Try a “10-minute tidy” where everyone chooses different rooms of the house to tidy up for 10 minutes. Make it a contest by offering a treat for the tidiest room. It may make the family more active, and more willing to help out!

Set Fun Goals:

Make a holiday goal for how many steps you want to take each day. Give everyone a pedometer and see who can take the most steps. For a team challenge, add up your steps each day and see how much you have walked as a family. Make it a competition with another family by seeing who can take the most steps. By the end of the holiday you can announce the winner of the “Most Active Family Member” award!

Every family is different, so choose something that your family will love. It doesn’t matter what type of exercise you do; the most important thing is to make sure everyone feels motivated to be active. Enjoy the holidays!
