Stay hydrated! It’s something you hear almost every day.

What exactly is important about being hydrated, other than satisfying your thirst? It has a bigger effect on your health than you may think. 60% of your body is made up of water, and when you engage in physical activity you lose it through sweat. If you don’t refuel it can have a negative effect on your body.

Drinking water assists joints and body tissues to function. It also regulates body temperature and helps to transport nutrients. It has a lot of benefits for your body. If you don’t drink enough you can feel fatigued; your blood gets thicker from the low water content which makes your heart work harder. Not drinking enough water can actually tire you out!

To ensure you won’t be dehydrated during a workout, make sure to drink plenty before you begin. During your workout try to drink 4 ounces of water every 15 minutes. Finally, after your workout, continue to drink to catch up on the water you lost. The harder you work and sweat, the more water you will need to recover.

Water isn’t your only option for fuel; coconut water and sports drinks are popular among our members. After a tough workout you can also refuel your muscles with a protein drink or chocolate milk. Drinks like these help you regain sodium, carbs, and protein to refuel energy and repair damage. The important thing to remember is that your body needs fuel to keep it going.

Whether you are into water, or something fancier, it’s very important for your health to stay hydrated. Your body will thank you!
