Information about In-Shape’s Chapter 11 Restructuring

As you know, California’s mandated shutdown of gyms has kept us closed for the better part of 2020. That has led us to take steps to restructure so we can focus our resources to ensure our long-term viability. On Dec. 16, 2020, we filed petitions for relief under Chapter 11 in order to facilitate the financial restructuring of the company.

 

Providing you with a safe place to work out and a welcoming community has always been our focus. We have enhanced our experience this year with a new reservation app which enables you to both reserve your time at the club as well as reserve your favorite amenity (class, lap swim, etc.).  We have also implemented the highest standards of safety including cleanliness, touchless check-in and many other safety protocols.

 

We currently have In-Shape Outdoors open to help our members stay healthy during the current shutdowns; please see locations here.  We look forward to welcoming you back indoors when the state allows us to fully reopen.

Q: What does “restructuring” mean for In-Shape?

A: California’s mandated shutdown of gyms has kept us closed for the better part of 2020 and has dramatically impaired our revenue. Financial restructuring provides us a clear path forward. It’s a legal tool that will allow us to focus our resources to ensure our long-term viability.

 

Q: Is In-Shape going out of business?

A: In-Shape has been helping Californians to stay healthy, fit and happy for nearly 40 years, and we’re not going anywhere.

 

Q: Will In-Shape be closing more clubs?

A: Throughout the pandemic, we’ve had to close some of our clubs permanently due to the COVID-19 restrictions. In-Shape expects to emerge from its restructuring with a smaller, more focused portfolio of about 45 clubs across California and will remain positioned to be the leading fitness and community destination in our markets.

 

Q: What if my club has closed?

A: If your club is closed, your membership will be transferred to a nearby club. If at this time you decide to select a different home club or make other changes to your membership status, you can do so through the In-Shape app or Member Hub.

 

Q: What changes will I see at my club?

A: The filing will not impact your in-club experience. Throughout the shutdowns, we’ve developed technology and protocols to enhance your fitness experience and provide a safe environment. We currently have In-Shape Outdoors open to help you stay healthy, and we look forward to welcoming you back indoors when the state allows us to fully reopen.

 

Q: Will this affect my membership? Will my membership fees go up?

A: The filing will not affect your membership or your current rates.

 

Q: What will happen to the In-Shape team?

A: In-Shape and our extraordinary team members are not going anywhere. We’ll continue to support our communities in their fitness journeys as we work through this restructuring process.

 

Q: Is the In-Shape name changing?

A: No, the In-Shape name is not changing.
